How Mobile Number Portability Works in India

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) enables users to retain their existing mobile phone number even if they opt to switch for another network service provider.

Below is the process to be followed:-

* Send an SMS: PORTMobile Number to 1900 (eg. PORT 9123456899)

* You will get an SMS immediately with a 8 digit alpha-numeric porting code

* Submit the code to your preferred operator along with necessary paper documents (Note that the unique porting code expires after 24 hours)

* Once you are done with the documentations with your new operator, you will be successfully ported to the new network within a maximum of 4 working days.

* You are done.

It costs you a maximum of Rs. 19 to change your operator which sounds pretty reasonable. However any existing balance with the old operator won’t be carried forward to the new operator, spend them before applying for mobile number portability.

you have ported to different service provider, you can not change the operator for the next 90 days. The whole process of switching from one operator to another should not take more than 4 days and your number will be dead for about 2 hours between 10PM to 5AM.

As per the report Facebook.com grabbed the number one ranking in the category for the first time in July with 20.9 million visitors, up 179 percent versus year ago. Orkut ranked second with 19.9 million visitors (up 16 percent vs. year ago), followed by BharatStudent.coma and twitter.com. Below are some stats from comScore.

Although it was orkut which was the first real product that brought social networking to India, but then there was lot of developments with facebook, which took it to the top spot. In my view the following development were a key for facebook's current success.

Eight Indian companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), have made the cut on the list of the world's 500 largest companies compiled by Fortune magazine...

The league of 500 elite companies for 2010 is topped by U.S. retailer Wal-Mart Stores, followed by Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil, in that order. IOC has the highest rank of 125 among the featured Indian companies, followed by RIL at the 175th spot, SBI (282), BPCL (307), HPCL (354), Tata Steel (410), ONGC (413) and Tata Motors (442).

A recent news making its round in the blogosphere is, that Google is currently working on a secret project code named 'caffeine'. Well what exactly is this 'caffeine' project? Its basically a next-generation architecture for Google's web search. Caffeine focuses on increasing speed of its web search along with more accurate relevancy to topics searched.

Look-wise, the new search engine doesn’t appear much different, but its developers hope that the technology they have used will noticeably index new web content more faster and efficiently. Google engineers are said to have invited web developers to test the new search engine, and give feedbacks.

If you are interested to give feedback on the differences between Google's current search results and the new system, this is how you do it.

Do a search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says "Dissatisfied? Help us improve." Click on that link, type your feedback in the text box and then include the word caffeine somewhere in the text box.

Just add the word 'kiss' in front of youtube.com. The url changes to http://www.kissyoutube.com/watch?v=1A6vkjkG7yg

Then press the ‘Enter’ and it will bring you to kissyoutube website. Click on the download link provided to save the video to your computer.

2. KickYouTube : Just like above, instead of 'kiss' use the word 'kick'. This takes you to the KickTube.com website where at the top of the video you could selet the format of video download. Format includes 3GP, Gif, Avi, Mp3, mp4 etc.. Hit "Go" then "Download" option appeares.

Microsoft's Kumo to compete the 'Google' ?

Since Microsoft has decided to drop its bid for Yahoo and focuses to improve its Live Search engine a possibility of re branding is on the cards. In an effort to grab more market share in search domain dominated by Google, Microsoft is to unveil the new search engine next week.

Microsoft has never publicly acknowledged that it will rename its Live Search engine Kumo, but the company has confirmed it's testing a search engine internally using the Kumo.com URL. Bing is another name rumored to be the rebrand for the next iteration of Live Search.

As per Microsoft he technology behind Kumo is designed to cut down on the length of typical Web searches by grouping the results of a search for, say, a particular model of car into helpful categories like parts, used car listings, online discussion forums and videos showing the vehicle.

Microsoft is planning a major advertising campaign to promote the new search engine and has hired the agency JWT, a unit of London-based WPP PLC, to develop a campaign for the product.

Although I doubt Kumo will eat Google’s market share anytime soon, it will be interesting to see what Microsoft has to offer that Google doesn’t or if it will just be a rebranded Live search.

Twitter was born about three years ago, when few employees working at a podcasting company called Odeo Inc. in South Park, San Francisco thought of reinventing the company.

The original product name / codename “twttr” was inspired by Flickr. Today Twitter has become a phenom and a new communication form and channel that is here to stay for long. How you use it is up to you entirely.

Swine flu was first proposed to be a disease related to human influenza during the 1918s flu pandemic, when pigs became sick at the same time as humans. The H1N1 form of swine flu is one of the descendants of the strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.

The 2009 flu outbreak is due to a new strain of subtype H1N1 not previously reported in pigs. The ongoing outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) continues to expand in the United States and internationally.

FriendFeed seems to be a fascinating combination of a.) an aggregation tool bringing information in from all around the web, b.) a big public conversation and c.) a publishing tool for original content.

The FriendFeed service pulls in data from all the different social networks you tell it that you participate in, allowing your FriendFeed friends to see and discuss your activities on those networks whether they happen to participate in them or not.

FriendFeed also has a new messaging options somewhat akin to Twitter, which are exposed through a clever, powerful new posting box at the top of the page. Recently a StalkDaily.com XSS worm hit the popular micro-blogging site Twitter compromising security and automatically hijacking user accounts. 17 years old author of the worm Mikey Mooney who lives in Winnfield, Louisiana claimed responsibility for releasing the worm to prove that Twitter is very vunerable to cross site scripting flaw.

The spam worm was spread through Twitter profile pages–just visiting a member’s profile was enough to spread the infection. The code used to infect people’s accounts were on the Twitter pages themselves.

Large Internet spy network uncovered in China.

Based in China, a cyber spy network has successfully infiltrated computer networks from government offices around the world, according to the BBC. The network has infiltrated no less than 1,295 computers in 103 countries in the past year.

Computers belonging to foreign ministries and embassies and those linked with the Dalai Lama have been hacked into and their data has been compromised. However, there's still no conclusive evidence that China's government was behind it, and Beijing has denied its involvement.

An extraordinary behind-the-scenes struggle is taking place between computer security groups around the world and the brazen author of a malicious software program called Conficker.

Conficker is a program that is spread by exploiting several weaknesses in Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Various versions of the software have spread widely around the globe since October, mostly outside the United States because there are more computers overseas running unpatched, pirated Windows.

An estimated 12 million or more machines have been infected. However, many have also been disinfected, so a precise census is difficult to obtain.

Simple working hacks to access YouTube from China

Internet users across China are unable to access the video sharing website YouTube from Monday 23rd March. The reasons for the block is still unknown with few stories going around. Although Google informed they are working as quickly as possible to restore access but did not specify what those steps might be.

So one can expect some time before things turn normal. So I thought of sharing some simple working hacks to access YouTube from China.

vTunnel: Provides an in-browser proxy solution to access YouTube behind any firewall and watch videos.

* Type regedit and find HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the registry

* Right-click on the white space, press New->Dword value->and name it plural.
* Right-click on it, press modify and set a value that represents the maximum number of usernames you want to login with at the same time.

A brand new orkut trick was making its round in the blogosphere last week, so i thought of testing it and walla it turned out to be very useful for me. What it does is that it converts the orkut scrapbook entries to RSS feed source, so one can check his scrapbook or friends scrapbook without logging in to orkut.

All you need is a Firefox or greasemonkey extension and you have to install a Orkut grease monkey script and this will automatically helps you to display all your feeds of Orkut scrap book. Microsoft could buy UStream.tv

UStream.tv is in advanced discussions with Microsoft to acquire UStream for more than $50 million, but there are other companies in the bidding as well. UStream is currently raising a very large Series A and Microsoft is attempting to grab them pre-funding for a cheap price. Our tipster also mentions that Microsoft would use UStream as a way to promote it's Adobe Flash competitor, Silverlight.

UStream has raised around $2 million in funding via two small angel rounds, and seems to have hit the market at just the right time.

Firefox has announced that it will release the new Beta 3 version of Firefox 3 this coming Monday. Apparently there are two new features that will be included in this release.

The year 2008 could be a boom year for VOIP in india, atleast this seems so when MTNL cuts its VOIP tariff which makes it call around 100 countries for as low as one rupee a minute. Yes this could be considered as the new year bonanza from MTNL, which recently announced the slashed international call rates.

MTNL's a rupees one per minute (US 2.6 cents) plan covers call rates to about 100 countries such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia and Kuwait. Call rates to US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong are already stand at Rs one minute.

A new Google service, dubbed "knol", will invite individuals to write “authoritative articles” on their areas of expertise, the firm revealed yesterday.

Android, Google’s mobile platform, is finally open to the developers. Now you can download the SDK and start to develop great applications in Java. Google launched a competition that offers $10 million awards for the most interesting apps (the biggest prize is quite significant: $275,000).

You can submit your applications between January 2 and March 3, 2008, but you sure can start developing your applications now. (Also check out the developers blog if you are interested)

The SDK supports all three major operating systems: Windows (XP or later), Mac (10.4.8 or later), and Linux. In addition to the SDK package, you will also download an addition IDE program. The applications for Android are written Java programming language and the user interface information are stored in a XML file.

Nokia recently announced the 6131 NFC phone, the first integrated NFC handset that will (operators willing) be available to the public. NFC stands for Near Field Communications and it's a short-range wireless technology which creates a kind of handshake when you phone is bought in to contact with a compatible device.

This technology allows consumers to use to phone for small purchases - so soon your Nokia 6131 NFC could be buying your coffee, paying for your tube tickets or exchanging business card and other information. The iPhone is easily the most talked about piece of consumer electronics for 2007. However iPhone is only available on AT&T network (Two-Year Contract and $175 Termination Fee). This restriction gave a good reason for hundreds of minds to put their brains to crack this protection/restriction.

The group iPhone Dev Wiki has discovered a way to partially unlock the device so that it can work with any AT&T or Cingular SIM card without the need for the exclusive new contract. While Jon Lech Johansen, the software engineer who first developed the crack of DVD’s copy protection, has been able to develop a hack that activates the iPhone so that it can at least play music and perform WiFi tricks without the AT&T contract, the phone remained locked so that it could not be used to make phone calls. The team at fusion.osx86.hu/#iphone have worked out how to hack the iPhone so that instead of a two-year contract, it can be operated as a prepaid cellphone using a small piece of command-line software called IASign, a new iPhone activation tool.

However, the software is only one part of an 18-step plan to crack open the iPhone to use an existing Cingular/AT&T prepaid SIM card. To perform the hack, you need an Intel-based Mac computer and the tutorial found at HacktheiPhone.com.

" Using iASign, you'll be able to activate existing AT&T and Cingular Sims without signing a new contract," is what is wrote on the Wiki page. The writer added that they have confirmed the method to also work with virtual operators such as 7-11 wireless.

Follow the below steps.

1 Click open 'My Computer', then C drive (Or the drive in which you installed windows)
2 Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder.
3 Locate the files named "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" and copy them to a safe location such as a USB key or CD or another drive.
4 Reformat your disk and reinstall Windows XP on your reformatted hard drive, click "No" when asked if you want to activate Windows.
5 Reboot your computer into SafeMode (press F8 as Windows is booting up to see the Windows Advanced Options menu and select SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal)
6 Open 'My Computer', then C drive again.
7 Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder again.
8 Locate the files named "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (if it exists) and rename them to "wpadbl.new" and "wpabak.new"
9 Copy your original "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" files from your USB key, CD or DVD or other location into the C:\Windows\System32 folder
10 Restart your system.

How to fix scratched CDs and DVDs

Polish the CD. Though counterintuitive, polishing a disc can repair a scratched CD by removing some of the outer plastic coating and thus making existing scratches shallower. A number of common household products can be used to polish the CD, but toothpaste especially baking soda toothpaste and Brasso are probably the most tried-and-true. You can also use a fine grit polishing compound that's used for cars or hard finishes.

Apply a small amount of toothpaste (must be paste, not gel) or Brasso to a soft, clean, lint-free cloth: an eyeglass-cleaning cloth works well. Gently rub the cloth on the scratch or scuff in a non-radial motion, start at the center and rub to the edge and go around in strokes. Rubbing in a circular motion can cause small scratches that throw off the laser tracking system in the player. Try to focus your efforts solely on the scratch or scratches you’ve identified (if possible). Polish in this manner for a couple of minutes, reapplying Brasso or toothpaste to the cloth as necessary.

Be careful not to apply much pressure, although you will still be able to feel the cloth gently scratching the CD as it polishes.
